John Widdicomb French Provincial Bombé Serpentine Walnut Commode or Dresser, Signed A handsome French Provincial Louis XV-style commode by John Widdicomb, Grand Rapids, Michigan. The two-drawer case features a serpentine, bombé-inspired front with book-matched burl walnut drawer fronts set within a molded, shaped case, raised on gently curved cabriole legs with carved scroll and floral knee decoration and scrolled sabots. The top has a conforming serpentine edge, and the apron is centered with a carved shell or foliate motif — all hallmarks of the Louis XV Provincial idiom the John Widdicomb Company was known for after founder John Widdicomb split from the family firm in 1897 to specialize in Louis XV and French Provincial furnishings. The drawers are fitted with pierced, scrolling brass pulls and matching brass escutcheons in a classic rocaille design. Retains the maker's original branded label, "John Widdicomb, Makers of Fine Furniture, Grand Rapids, Michigan," to the interior.

About John Widdicomb : John Widdicomb was a pivotal figure in American furniture design, renowned for his contributions to both traditional and modern styles. In 1897, he established the John Widdicomb Company in Grand Rapids, Michigan, focusing on high-quality craftsmanship and innovative design. Born in 1845, John Widdicomb was trained in England before immigrating to the United States. In 1857, his father, George Widdicomb, founded a cabinet shop in Grand Rapids, Michigan. John joined the family business, which later became the Widdicomb Furniture Company in 1873. In 1897, he branched out to create his own company, emphasizing fine woodwork and elegant design Under John's leadership, the company gained acclaim for its Louis XV and French Provincial-style furnishings, introducing these designs to the American market. His nephew, Ralph Widdicombe, served as the company's primary designer until 1951, earning international recognition for his work, including a gold medal at the 1900 Paris Exposition. The company also collaborated with notable designers such as Frank Lloyd Wright, T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings, and George Nakashima, further cementing its reputation for excellence in furniture design.
