About the artist:
Joan Miró (1893-1983) was a Catalan painter, sculptor, and printmaker, and one of the leading figures of Surrealism. Born in Barcelona, he studied art there before moving to Paris in the 1920s, where he joined the Surrealist circle of André Breton and others. He developed a distinctive visual language of biomorphic shapes, floating stars, birds, and bold primary colors set against spare, atmospheric backgrounds, aiming for a childlike spontaneity that drew on dreams and the subconscious. His career spanned the Spanish Civil War and both World Wars, and he remained closely tied to Catalonia throughout. In later decades he worked extensively in ceramics, sculpture, tapestry, and murals, and he became a prolific printmaker, collaborating with workshops such as Mourlot in Paris. He died in Palma de Mallorca in 1983. His work is held in major collections worldwide, including the Fundació Joan Miró in Barcelona, which he founded in 1975.
