About the artist : Frederick Goodall R.A. (British, 1822–1904) Frederick Goodall R.A. was a distinguished Victorian-era British painter, celebrated for his Orientalist scenes and academic realism. Born in London in 1822, Goodall was the son of the engraver Edward Goodall, which exposed him early to the world of fine art and craftsmanship. He trained at the Royal Academy Schools, where he developed a disciplined academic style grounded in careful observation, strong composition, and refined technique. Goodall first gained recognition for historical and genre scenes, but his career took a defining turn after traveling extensively to Egypt and the Middle East beginning in the 1850s. He spent long periods living among local communities, studying daily life, architecture, costume, and landscape firsthand—an approach that distinguished his work from more imaginary or studio-based Orientalist painters. His paintings often depict Bedouins, desert landscapes, camels, and scenes along the Nile, rendered with a calm dignity and naturalism rather than theatrical exoticism.
